Richard Evans Younger

Richard Evans Younger arrived by a circuitous route as one of the acknowledged leaders in the field of wildlife art.  He has worked as a photo retoucher, a Navy diver and photographer, a television personality, a printer and an advertising executive.  Throughout these pursuits he had a strong attachment to the outdoors such as becoming a champion archer, an expert fisherman and a seasoned hunter.

From his earliest years he showed a talent for drawing.  Sketches and paintings won him first prizes in his early teens.  In high school, he worked as a photo retoucher, which led him to portrait painting.  These two kept him busy and in funds during those years and during his years in the Navy.

Following the Navy experience, he enrolled in Kansas City Art Institute, transferring later to Missouri Valley College.  After studying under Remington Schuyler, he began to spend more time outdoors to hunt and fish and to research for his sketches of wildlife.  About this time, he changed from oils to watercolor which he considered a better medium for his style of art.

In 1958, he visited the state of Florida and decided this was to be his home.  He began his study of lithography, which opened up new avenues.  His pictures of fish and wildlife got his work printed in many outdoor publications, one of which was Field and Stream As an outdoorsman and wildlife artist Younger is also an ardent conservationist.  “It is frightening,” he says, “to see what’s happening all over the United States.  The Natural habitats of our wildlife are being pushed back and sometimes destroyed.”
