The rule of thumb is that if the fastener is in a corrosive environment (e.g within 5kms of the coast), G316 is preferable, particularly if the fastener is to be seen, as G316 is less like to "tea-stain" or develop a brown discolouration.

Machine screws are uniformly threaded screws, meaning they maintain the exact same diameter throughout the entire length of the threaded section of the fastener, unlike wood or chipboard screws which have tapered threads
Machine screws can be used to fasten components together by means of through holes and secured with a nut at the other end. But they can also be used to fasten components together by passing the machine screw through the parts and then threading it into the rearmost component

Round Head Slotted Machine Screws, also know as Metal Threads were commonly used in old Motor Vehicles, furniture, electrical and industrial equipment
BSW = Imperial Coarse Thread
BSW and UNC have the same thread per inch value, except for the 1/2" size. Theoretical it would be possible to interchange them as they have the same amount of threads per inch. However due to the difference in thread angle, the connection would not be as strong as when using the proper combinations
