GREAT BLACK-BACKED GULL

The general public lumps all species of gulls together as “seagulls” which is quite understandable considering the similarity of many species. But gulls are not really very sea-going on the whole. As its scientific name suggests, the Black-back is more restricted to the coast than most; and as its common name suggests, not difficult to identify. Our local baymen call them “Coffin-backs’. In recent years they have established a breeding colony within a few miles of my home on Long Island, nearly the southern limit of their nesting range, which otherwise includes the coasts of the North Atlantic and southern Arctic Oceans north to Greenland and Russia. I decided to paint them against that “stern and rock-bound coast” where they seem to be more typically located than here along our broad beaches.

DON ECKELBERRY
Don Eckelberry, born in 1921, has been a major player throughout the era of the illustrated field guide. Of his 14 books, the most widely recognized are probably Richard H. Pough's series of Audubon Bird Guides (1946-57) for which the artist produced 1,250 images. Another multi-volume production is Brown and Amadon's Eagles, Hawks and Falcons of the World sponsored by the National Audubon Society. Unlike the flattened forms typical of field-guide style, Eckelberry's birds are aesthetically appealing yet allow easy comparison.
