Known to most as the Hall of Fame Broncos quarterback, John Elway was also a highly touted baseball prospect. He was first drafted into the Major Leagues by the Kansas City Royals in 1979. Elway chose to attend Stanford and delayed his pro baseball career until 1982, when the New York Yankees anted up $100,000 for his contract.
Elway ended up playing 42 games for the Single A Oneonta Yankees in 1982, batting .318 with 4 homers and 25 RBI. The infamous George Steinbrenner bragged that Elway would be the Bronx Bombers right fielder by 1985.
Elway ended up chosing the NFL and the rest is Broncos lore.
This card was issued at the 1998 Major League Baseball All-Star Game FanFest. The front of the card features a black & white photo of Elway in an Oneonta Yankees uniform. The reverse features a brief biography over a ghosted photo of Elway as with Broncos, and his career minor league stats.
One of few items of John Elway's promising baseball career, a definitive quality collectible piece of sports history!
