How it works

A Spacer is a device that looks like a clear plastic tube. Spacers are used to decrease the amount of medication that settles in the throat and to increase the amount of medication that reaches the lungs. They can also reduce the side effects of inhaled steroid medications. Spacers are generally easier to use than puffers, as they do not require the same degree of coordination. Small Volume Spacers (AeroChamber, Breath-a-Tec) are more suited to children, because of their small lung capacity compared to adults.
Spacers should be used in the following instances:
- By all adults who have poor co-ordination when using a metered dose inhaler.
- By children of all ages. Children under 4 years can use a metered dose inhaler and a small volume valved Spacer (AeroChamber, Breath-A-Tech) with a facemask.
- During an acute attack. Giving doses of reliever medication with a metered dose inhaler and Spacer is an effective alternative to using a nebuliser.
- For practically all people using preventer medication with a metered dose inhaler.
Because of problems with electrostatic charge, Spacers should not be cleaned too often. The Spacer should be cleaned with warm soapy water when the valve mechanism begins to stick (e.g. once per month). The Spacer should be left to air dry to also avoid particles adhering to the side of the Spacer.

USING A SPACER - GUIDELINES
Spacer with mask
- Remove dustcap from puffer and shake the puffer. Insert puffer in the end on the Spacer with the hole (opposite end to the mask).
- Place the mask securely over the nose and mouth and ensure the puffer is upright.
- Press the puffer once and keep the mask in place for six breaths. (Repeat this final step if more than one puff is ordered).

Spacer with mouthpiece
- Assemble the spacer device if necessary.
- Remove dustcap from puffer and shake the puffer. Insert puffer in the end opposite the mouthpiece.
- Place the mouthpiece in the mouth, between the teeth and closed lips.
- Press the puffer down once. Breathe in slowly and deeply through the mouth four times. (Repeat this final step if more than one puff is ordered).

If you have any queries on how to use a Spacer, ask your Pharmacist. The efficiency of a Spacer diminishes if the pMDI (pressurised metered Dose Inhaler) is actuated more than once per patient inhalation.
BEST SPACER USE
- Use one puff per patient inhalation.
- Inhale as soon as possible after actuation of the pMDI (pressurised metered Dose Inhaler). Keep delay to a minimum between actuation of the inhaler and inhalation from the Spacer.
- Reduce Spacer static electricity as often as possible.
- Ideally use the Spacer designed for each formulation.
- Consider patient preferences in the choice of a Spacer. This may lead to better patient compliance.
