INSTALLATION The VBS3 BATTERY SAVER consists of three separate parts:- 1) The “PULSAR PAK” power supply unit. 2) The electronic control unit. 3) Optional extension lead. Connect the crocodile clips to the battery terminals, ensuring correct polarity. RED TO POSITIVE. BLACK TO NEGATIVE. Route the cable carefully, avoiding hot or moving parts and mount the control box in a convenient position where it is easy to connect and disconnect the “PULSAR PAK”,and where the indicator light can be seen Once installed it may be left in position and connected. It never needs to be disturbed again. When you are satisfied with the installation of the battery lead and the control unit connect the “PULSAR PAK” into the control unit. If the indicator light flashes at this stage, before plugging into the mains supply, then the crocodile clips are wrongly connected to the battery. Please ensure RED TO POSITIVE, BLACK TO NEGATIVE. Finally plug the “PULSAR PAK” into the mains supply. The indicator should flash constantly to indicate that maintenance is taking place. The VBS 3 system should be left permanently connected when the battery is out of use. When coming to use the battery simply disconect the “PULSAR PAK” from the control unit. QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS When should the indicator flash? When connected to a battery and plugged into the mains supply the indicator will flash to show that proper trickle charging is taking place. Where a battery has recently been charged by a conventional charger the terminal voltage may have been driven above 13.8 volts. Under these circumstances the indicator will not flash until the terminal voltage falls to a normal level. Can I wire the cables directly to the vehicle and dispense with the crocodile clips ? Yes but there must be a fuse in the circuit. Safety components hidden within the crocodile clips would be removed with the clips, so for a permanently wired installation a fuse of between 1 and 5 amps should be included in the supply circuit. Can I use a single VBS 3 system to maintain two 6 volt batteries ? Yes connected in series to produce 12 volts the two batteries can be considered as a single 12 volt battery. Do I have to connect the crocodile clips directly to the battery ? It is in a difficult place. No, There are other points in a vehicle where a 12 volt supply from the battery is available any such point is suitable. One popular place is the starter solenoid which has a direct cable to the battery but there are often other suitable places. If I accidentally connect the clips the wrong way round on the battery will there be any damage ? The battery will not be maintained. Over a long period the battery will become discharged. There will be no damage to the VBS 3, it will automatically shut down until a proper connection is made. The battery could be permanently damaged if left in a discharged state for a long period. HOW CAN I TEST THE VBS3 IF I SUSPECT IT MAY BE FAULTY ? 1) Remove the clips from the battery. … 2) Connect the two crocodile clips together. 3) Plug the system into the mains supply. IF THE INDICATOR FLASHES BRIGHTLY FOR A FEW SECONDS THEN DIMS, THE SYSTEM IS IN GOOD WORKING ORDER
