Recycled Wire and Bead Bicycle Earrings

Kisumu, Kenya has long been known for artisans who make products from "easily obtained materials", a nice way of saying "trash". Whether it's their signature "Dancing Girls" from recycled wire from car engines and tin cans or bicycles from copper and steel wire, the artisans present a whimsical view of Kenyan life. Fair Trade and recycled, it just doesn't get any better.

These darling little bicycle earrings are made from recycled copper car engine and steel wire, accented with tiny blue glass beads.

They measure 1.75 inches long from the top of the ear wire and 1.5 inches wide. They are packaged with the informative card as pictured.

Meet the Artisans

Afrika Pamoja (Formerly TEMAK)
Afrika Pamoja is a Kenyan social entrepreneurial project where young women who learned to make handicrafts can earn a living. These young women joined the Teenage Mothers and Girls Association of Kenya to learn vocational skills and chose craft-making from the available training programs including secretarial, hair-dressing, and tailoring. The women carry on the long tradition of making jewelry from recycled materials, an income-generating vocation for many men and women in the Kisumu, Kenya area.

In addition to supporting the sales of products the young women of TEMAK make, Afrika Pamoja also acts as a marketing organization for other craftspeople in Western Kenya.

Fair Trade means that artisans are paid a fair price in advance for their products and work in safe working conditions. It provides the framework for empowering the disadvantaged of the world to make a fair living and provide for themselves and their families.
