About this quarter
The original Vermont quarter 25-cent coin was issued in 2001. Vermont was the 14th state to be admitted to the Union, on March 4, 1791, the first state after the 13 original colonies.
The design features an image of the a couple of maple trees, with Camel's Hump Mountain in the background.
Vermont is well known for its production of maple syrup and the design shows each of the trees tapped with sap buckets attached to capture the syrup.

How was this cut coin made?
This quarter has been hand-cut-out with a tiny saw blade -- not cut by a machine or laser. First several holes were drilled thorough the coin surface, then a coin cutter with decades of coin cutting experience used a jewelers blade to "cut away" the background, leaving the remaining design as you see. The cut coin design remaining is that part of the coin "un cut."
The original coin came from the same coins you see every day, but the those areas your see in the photo that are darker have been removed -- cut away -- creating a pendant for use a jewelry. Then it has been used as a pendant.
You cannot spend it any more -- it is now jewelry.
