The Slothful Man As Seen in the Book of Proverbs: A Discourse Given in the Church of the Holy Trinity, Brooklyn Heights, The Seventeenth Sunday After Trinity, September 22d, 1872

By
Reverend Charles H. Hall, D.D.

John W. Amerman
New York
1872

At the time of publication, the author was Rector of the Church of the Holy Trinity, Brooklyn Heights.
The front cover has two handstamps: "The Providence Atheneum. Discarded" at the lower edge and "Oct. 2 1905" [presumably the date when the Atheneum had received the pamphlet] at the upper edge. Also, "H14" written but crossed through and "252" written in its stead at the top edge near the spine, probably library numbers. Back cover has two tiny paper remnants, possibly relating to the library. No other markings or signs of library ownership.
Charles Henry Hall (1820-1895) was born in Georgia, attended Newton, Andover, and Yale, was ordained an Episcopal priest, served as a minister at numerous churches and also served as Chaplain at West Point, before ultimately becoming the Rector for the Church of the Holy Trinity in Brooklyn Heights for 25 years. He also served on the Civil Service Commission in Brooklyn.
10, [2] p.; 23 cm. (9 inches). Grey stiffened, stapled wrappers. Last two, unnumbered, pages are blank.
First Edition

"The sluggard has been the subject of special attention with all moralists, religious teachers, statesmen and satirists alike. Every species of argument has been exhausted on him, and every method of reform attempted in vain" [from page 3]

Pamphlet is in Fair Condition: pages holding tight to the staples and are unmarked. As noted, library markings on the front cover. Vertical reading crease; light wear both ends of the spine; some small chips on the front cover. Both covers soiled. Very Rare!
