Handmade by Joe at Soprano Planet from vintage 1920s Buescher soprano blanks. The 868 Special is a top quality professional mouthpiece. Only a small number of these were ever made because of the limited availability of the vintage blanks Joe used. This model is now unavailable from the Soprano Planet website and is subsequently rare.
Features a larger chamber than modern squeeze-throat Bb soprano mouthpieces, though slightly smaller than full-size vintage large-chamber pieces.
It is designed to pair well with vintage instruments. Be aware that the neck cork may need adjusting to make this fit (it fits well on my 1920s Buescher soprano saxophone) and it may be slightly tighter than modern mouthpieces.
Produces a big, dense, and sweet tone with a rich, warm center, has an organic, singing quality distinct from more strident or modern projection-focused mouthpieces. blows comfortably with great control across dynamic extremes. Like other Soprano Planet hand-faced pieces, it has Joe Giardullo's precision facing work, helping eliminate erratic intonation tendencies common on soprano sax.
Plays with a Warm, large, sweet sound; great pitch control and flexibility.
Very Good condition, only lightly used. Comes with top quality vintage cloth ligature (and cap) which fits perfectly.
