First struck in
1986, the American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the
United States and one of the most widely collected modern coins in the world.
In 2021 the series received its first major redesign in 35 years, with the
introduction of a new reverse and a refined obverse – known to collectors as
the "Type 2" design.
This 2024 example
has been certified by NGC as MS 70, the highest grade on the Sheldon scale, and
carries the First Day of Issue designation. The label is hand-signed by Michael
Gaudioso, the former US Mint medallic artist who sculpted the Type 2 reverse,
and features a striking four-panel pop-art eagle design. A flawless coin, a
designer’s signature and a first-day pedigree make this a particularly
appealing piece for Silver Eagle collectors.
Obverse
Adolph A.
Weinman’s celebrated Walking Liberty, first used on the 1916 half dollar. Lady
Liberty strides towards the rising sun, draped in the Stars and Stripes, with
branches of laurel and oak in her left arm. Inscribed "LIBERTY",
"IN GOD WE TRUST" and "2024", with Weinman’s "AW"
monogram beneath the motto.
Reverse
Emily Damstra’s
Type 2 design, sculpted by Michael Gaudioso, depicts an American eagle coming
in to land while carrying an oak branch to add to its nest. Inscribed
"UNITED STATES OF AMERICA", "1 OZ. FINE SILVER" and
"ONE DOLLAR".
