COLLECTORS HOLY GRAIL EXTREMELY RARE. ONE OF THE JEWELS OF MY COLLECTION. I cannot find another brand new sealed copy of this for sale anywhere on the internet!
This CD features Christmas music originally recorded by Bing Crosby towards the end of his "glory years". The bulk of the CD is taken from Bing's 1962 album I Wish You a Merry Christmas. It also features his 1963 single "Do You Hear What I Hear?" and it's b-side "Christmas Dinner Country Style".
And also his duet with David Bowie of "Peace on Earth/The Little Drummer Boy", which was recorded for Bing's last television special, a few months before he died in 1977. Peace On Earth, Bowie’s part in the duet, was especially written for him to sing with Bing. I loved Bing as a child, and loved Bowie from his first album. I remember seeing this video back in the 70’s and I can tell you, I welled up.
On the I Wish You a Merry Christmas album, Bing tackled some Christmas standards he hadn't previously recorded, along with a few newer songs. He handled it with his usual class; this guy practically invented Christmas music, and he knew exactly how to sell this type of song. "O Holy Night" is wonderful; quite moving, actually. Of course, the highlight of the CD is Bing's classic hit "Do You Hear What I Hear?", which has gone on to become a standard. Bing was the first to record the song, and his version is still the definitive version. And, of course, the Bowie duet is extremely special to me and just becomes more popular every year. At 74 years old, Bing Crosby was still "The Voice of Christmas"!
The Bing/Bowie duet never actually got released until November 1982 as a single, and sold over 500,000 copies and hitting No.3 in the UK. Strangely it only made it 46 in the states and never even got released in most countries.
In 1999, Capitol Records commissioned Bob Norberg to 24bit digitally remaster this album for CD for the first time and they added the Bing/Bowie duet to the end. THIS IS MY FAVOURITE XMAS ALBUM OF ALL TIME. The sound quality is supreme like most Japanese releases.
It is BRAND NEW, STILL FACTORY SEALED NEVER BEEN PLAYED. Packed away in storage for nearly 20 years.
