Lower Danube Celts refers to Celtic-speaking peoples and communities established in and around the lower Danube and Balkan regions, particularly areas corresponding broadly to parts of modern Romania, Bulgaria and neighboring southeastern Europe. Celtic groups expanded into the Balkans during the 4th and 3rd centuries BC, becoming involved in warfare, trade and mercenary service throughout the Hellenistic world. Their coinage frequently copied the widely circulating silver money of Macedonia. Imitative Macedonian coinage began in the Danube region within decades of Philip II's death, gradually developing increasingly distinctive local styles.
The prototype
for this coin belongs to the coinage of Philip III Arrhidaeus, king of Macedon
from 323 to 317 BC. Philip III was a son of Philip II and half-brother of
Alexander the Great. Following Alexander's death at Babylon in 323 BC, Philip
was proclaimed king jointly with Alexander's infant son, Alexander IV.
Effective political authority, however, remained largely with the generals and
regents struggling for control of Alexander's empire. Philip III was eventually
captured and killed on the orders of Olympias in 317 BC.
