Full Brockage Error, 42 BC Imperial Roman Denarius, C. Vibius Varus, NGC Fine .  An exceptional rare full brockage error coin of a scarce and historically significant Roman denarius issue.  Obverse features the regular Helmeted bust of Minerva facing right, wearing aegis.  While the reverse would normally show an image of Hercules, this coin instead features an incuse Helmeted bust of Minerva.

Struck during one of the most turbulent periods of the late Roman Republic, this silver denarius was issued by the moneyer C. Vibius Varus in 42 BC. The coin dates to the aftermath of Julius Caesar’s assassination, when Rome was divided between the forces of Caesar’s assassins and the Second Triumvirate of Octavian, Mark Antony and Lepidus.

The year 42 BC was especially significant for the Battle of Philippi, where the armies of Brutus and Cassius were defeated by Antony and Octavian, helping bring an end to the Republican resistance. Coins of C. Vibius Varus therefore belong to the dramatic final decades of the Roman Republic and the political struggles that ultimately led to the establishment of the Roman Empire.
