X-Men: Unforgiven #1 throws Marvel's mutants directly into a supernatural horror story as the X-Men cross paths with The Forgiven, a team of vampires attempting to use their supernatural abilities as heroes while constantly fighting against their own bloodthirsty nature.
Following the destruction and chaos of Spider-Man: Unforgiven, mysterious human body parts begin washing ashore in Maine. Even stranger, the dismembered organs appear to be calling for help, drawing The Forgiven into a disturbing new mystery and bringing them face-to-face with the X-Men.
The connection becomes especially dangerous because of Jubilee's own history as a vampire. Bringing her into contact with The Forgiven risks reopening a dark chapter of her past while the X-Men attempt to uncover the horrifying force behind the events.
Writer Tim Seeley and artist Sid Kotian lean heavily into the darker side of the Marvel Universe, blending mutant superhero action with vampires, grotesque transformations and body-horror imagery.
The issue occupies the middle chapter of the interconnected Unforgiven saga, which brought The Forgiven back into prominence through encounters with several major Marvel heroes.
X-Men: Unforgiven #1 is a one-shot rather than the beginning of an ongoing X-Men series. Marvel published the issue on March 29, 2023 as part of the larger Unforgiven vampire storyline.
Its strongest collector appeal comes from the unusual combination of X-Men mythology and Marvel horror, particularly Jubilee's connection to vampirism and the return of The Forgiven.
This specific edition adds a much stronger physical-collectible angle:
JOHN GIANG • VIRGIN EXCLUSIVE • LIMITED TO 1,000 COPIES
Comic Kingdom's original listing documents 3,000 copies of the trade-dress edition and only 1,000 copies of this virgin edition.
Rather than relying on a questionable first-appearance claim, this book has a straightforward collector identity: a low-print-run John Giang virgin cover featuring Wolverine and Cyclops on a Marvel horror one-shot.
John Giang Virgin Exclusive — Limited to 1,000 Copies
John Giang goes all-in on horror for this cover, transforming two of the X-Men's most recognizable heroes into something genuinely monstrous.
Wolverine and Cyclops dominate the image, but neither resembles the polished superhero normally associated with the X-Men.
Wolverine looms over Cyclops with his mask twisted around a grotesque, almost skeletal face. His mouth has become an enormous collection of jagged teeth, creating the impression of a predatory creature rather than a mutant hero.
Cyclops occupies the foreground in an equally disturbing state. His mouth is stretched open in agony while multiple brilliant beams explode from his visor area. Giang's close-up composition leaves virtually no empty space, forcing both horrifying faces directly toward the viewer.
The entire image is saturated in deep crimson, black and burning red-orange highlights, giving the artwork a brutal horror-poster quality. The scattered glowing particles add another layer of energy while the reflected highlights make Wolverine's claws and Cyclops' beams appear almost white-hot.
The virgin format is particularly effective with this piece. Without logos or trade dress covering the artwork, Wolverine's enormous silhouette fills the entire upper portion while Cyclops and his intersecting energy beams consume the lower half.
Giang's signature remains visible within the artwork, but otherwise there is nothing to interrupt the image.
The combination of Wolverine, Cyclops, aggressive horror imagery and a documented 1,000-copy virgin print run gives the edition a clear identity for collectors of darker X-Men artwork and John Giang covers.
