An intriguing and apparently unpublished Victorian manuscript note sheet relating to Charles Stewart Parnell, the Parnell Commission, and contemporary Irish political affairs during 1889.
The sheet is entirely manuscript, including the ruled vertical and horizontal lines. It contains extensive notes in alternating black and red ink, with additional green markings including a diamond symbol and set of three green strokes, suggesting a deliberate system of indexing or cross-referencing.
The content concerns Parnell at the height of the controversy surrounding the Parnell Commission and The Times. References include:
Particularly notable is a manuscript reference to a dinner attended by Parnell, Gladstone, Lord Randolph Churchill, Campbell-Bannerman, Earl Aberdeen, Frederick Harrison, Mr & Lady Blunt and Shaw Lefevre.
The sheet contains numerous cross-references such as:
indicating it was originally part of a larger organised manuscript compilation rather than an isolated note.
The heading appears to read:
"Mrs. Anna Maria Wood of The Lodge, Eltham, died ..."
with part of the wording now lost due to an old tear. Anna Maria Wood is historically notable as the wealthy aunt whose estate later became associated with the family of Katharine O'Shea, the long-term partner and eventual wife of Charles Stewart Parnell. While no direct connection between the manuscript notes and subsequent legal disputes can be proven, the coincidence of the Anna Maria Wood heading and the extensive Parnell content is noteworthy.
Condition is poor. The sheet is horizontally split into two pieces and has age-related wear, losses and folds. Nevertheless, the manuscript remains largely legible and survives as a fascinating contemporary record of one of the most dramatic episodes in late Victorian politics.
An unusual piece of Parnell and Irish political history, apparently representing a surviving leaf from a larger nineteenth-century manuscript political reference or research compilation.
