The American Brewery in Baltimore, originally the Wiessner-American Brewery, closed in 1973 after over 40 years of operation following Prohibition
The brewery’s history began in 1863 with John F. Wiessner & Sons, which became one of Maryland’s largest and most famous breweries. It was forced to shut down in 1920 with the onset of Prohibition, but reopened after repeal in 1933 under new owners producing “American Beer” The American Brewery operated under various owners — including the American Malt Company and later the Alleghany Beverage Company — until the mid-1970s, when it ceased brewing activities
