Gaetano travelled extensively in Africa, and in 1883 he had joined Emin Pasha, who had by then been cut off by hostile troops of the Mahdi insurrection. In December 1889, Casati reached the coast with Emin Pasha and Henry Morton Stanley, who had led the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition.
In the uniform sumptuous decorated and crocodile skin textured cloth, with a palm tree in gilt beneath which a rectangle in silver features African natives who surround a white man bound to the tree.
Casati stamped in black lettering, with blind embossed title. Gilt titles to spine. Chocolate brown endpapers. Rough trimmed top page edges.
Four folding maps, three to the compartment to rear of Vol. I, one to rear of Vol II. Coloured, tinted and b&w plates throughout.
Vol I: xxi, 376. A tissue guarded sepia coloured photographic frontis. portrait of Casati. Some spotting to tissue paper and to prelims. Folding maps to rear compartment. Rear gutter to Vol I cracked but holding well. A short tear to rear at head of spine of six cms.
Vol II: tissue guarded colour frontis. of a landscape in Central Africa.
pp. xv, 347. pp. iv to vi unopened. 29 plates as well as numerous in text illustrations.
Rear gutter with a partial crack of some 8cm. A tear to the index page 344. Slight wear to head of spine.
A very nice set; bar the flaws, bright and well kept, presents well.
