Wetworks combines black-ops military action with superheroes, vampires, werewolves, supernatural warfare, and living golden armor. Created by Whilce Portacio and Brandon Choi during the formative years of Image Comics and WildStorm, the series centers on a covert military unit whose members become bonded with powerful golden symbiotes while carrying out a mission in Eastern Europe. Rather than returning to their former handlers, the transformed soldiers become Wetworks, using their new abilities against the supernatural forces operating secretly alongside humanity.
This four-book assortment spans two distinct eras of the property. The original #1 introduces the classic Wetworks concept and team during Image Comics' explosive early-1990s period. More than a decade later, WildStorm relaunched the property with a new series that brought Dane and the Wetworks concept back into a world still threatened by vampires and other supernatural factions.
Issues #6, #13 and #15 come from that 2006 relaunch and show the escalating supernatural conflict that eventually consumes the series. The later chapters feature the Night Tribes becoming an increasingly dangerous threat, the return and expansion of the Wetworks team, and an all-out struggle against enhanced supernatural forces spreading across Europe. #15 is the final issue of the 15-issue 2006 series, giving this lot both the original-era debut and the conclusion of the later revival.
Whilce Portacio is one of the original Image Comics founders and is known for influential work on X-Factor, Uncanny X-Men, The Punisher, and Wetworks. The later revival brought in Mike Carey, acclaimed writer of Lucifer, The Unwritten, and numerous X-Men stories, before Keith Giffen and J.M. DeMatteis, the celebrated creative partnership behind Justice League International, contributed to the series' final storyline. The lot therefore spans not only two generations of Wetworks but several notable creators from both mainstream and creator-owned comics.
The standout book is Wetworks #1, the original 1994 series premiere and a foundational issue for the property. It establishes the Wetworks team and the golden-symbiote concept that became the franchise's defining visual and story element.
The later books come from the 15-issue second Wetworks series, which ran from 2006 through 2008. #6 begins “The Scapegoat Effect,” while #13 begins the final “Unholy War” storyline.
Most notably, #15 is the series finale, concluding the 2006–2008 revival as Wetworks faces the strengthened Night Tribes. That gives the assortment an unusual bookend quality: it includes the original series' #1 as well as the final issue of the later revival.
The lot is heavily associated with Wetworks creator Whilce Portacio, whose muscular anatomy, detailed military designs, and supernatural imagery helped establish the visual identity of the property.
The 1994 #1 is especially representative of the early Image/WildStorm aesthetic, while the three later WildStorm issues show the evolution of Portacio's Wetworks designs more than a decade later. #6's dramatic winged supernatural figure, #13's brightly colored female combatant, and #15's chaotic battle composition give the four-book lot considerable visual variety while retaining a recognizable connection to the property's creator.
