(13) This Listing is for a Vintage c1978n Air Ministry Issue 'Evershed & Vignoles Ltd' Patent No:400728, 500 volt Megger Tester, which is in Working Order - It is a Hand Cranked Analogue Insulation Resistance Meter, complete with its original, rigid metal protective carry case, which is stamped with the Government Broad Arrow / Kite Mark. The Megger is housed in a durable Bakelite body - It is powered by built-in hand-operated direct current (DC) hand crank generator that spins to produce 500 volts. It measures 13.5cm wide x 9.8cm high x 5.7cm deep, and it is quite heavy, at 1.8kilos, hence the postage cost. In operation, an analog deflection needle moves across a nonlinear dial face, measuring high resistance values in megaohms (MΩ) from zero (short circuit) up to infinity. It was designed to test the integrity and breakdown of electrical insulation in wiring, cables, and motor windings, and it was heavily utilised across industrial, marine, and military applications, such as vintage models supplied to the Air Ministry through the mid-20th century. It is in great condition, in Working Order, and ready to use. It was registered under GB patent number 400728 granted in 1933. and it is enclosed in a moulded, reddish-brown Bakelite casing. The terminal connections have two spring-loaded black push-buttons on the side. To use simply press the buttons down, slip the bare end of the testing wires into the adjacent holes, and release to lock them in place. The meter movement uses a true ratiometer movement containing both a current coil and a voltage coil - This design prevents fluctuation in hand-crank speed from affecting the accuracy of the reading. The meter was made by Evershed & Vignoles of Acton Lane Works, Chiswick, London, W.4.
