This matching pair of antique 1920s French glazed terracotta bed warming bricks are finished in a rich, glossy caramel brown glaze. Known traditionally in France as a brique chauffe-lit, it is very unusual to find a matching pair of these blocks today. They were originally placed by the fire or in a wood oven to soak up heat, then wrapped in a towel and tucked into bed to keep feet warm, though this pair do not seem to have been used. Each thick brick has two central holes for handling and a simple stamped line border with small flowers in the corners. They are in rustic antique condition with a few character chips as shown in the photographs and revolving video. Weighing 2.7kg for the pair, they are heavy enough to use as unique statement bookends. Each brick measures 21.5cm long, 11cm wide and 3cm thick.
