Union Porcelain Works (UPW) was the most significant maker of oyster plates in the United States. The company operated in the late 19th century in New York. Three shapes of oyster plates were produced by UPW: the small clam shape, the large clam shape and the round shape like this oyster plate, Each plate was hand painted; the artists were given a lot of latitude in the color palette used. No two plates are exactly alike.
The raised seaweed on this plate is a deep shade of Prussian green. The border of the plate is a rich raspberry hue, as is the round center border. There is a small sea shell and two sea crabs. On the back of the plate is an impressed mark & the logo for UPW - an eagle with an "S" in its mouth. The plate is in excellent condition with no hairlines, chips or repairs.
