A good ecclesiastical autograph letter from the distinguished Anglican bishop Huyshe Wolcott Yeatman-Biggs.
Written from St Anne's School, Redhill, the bishop thanks Mr Chance for an offer of hospitality but explains that he must return home on Saturday evening. He proposes instead to call on Sunday afternoon while travelling home.
The letter reads in part:
"It is very good of you to offer me hospitality, but I find after all, that I must be at home Saturday night. Perhaps you will allow me to call on Sunday after lunch on my way home."

The writer was Huyshe Wolcott Yeatman-Biggs (1849-1922), who served as Suffragan Bishop of Southwark from 1891 to 1905 before becoming Bishop of Worcester and subsequently the inaugural Bishop of Coventry.
The letter was written from St Anne's School, Redhill, Surrey, a notable nineteenth-century girls' school. Although the precise occasion is unrecorded, Yeatman-Biggs was evidently attending an educational, social or ecclesiastical engagement there. The correspondence provides a glimpse into the extensive programme of school visits, church functions and social obligations undertaken by senior Anglican clergy in late Victorian and Edwardian England.
The recipient is addressed as "Mr Chance". Given the period, the recipient may possibly be Sir James Timmins Chance (1814-1902), the noted glass manufacturer and philanthropist, although this remains unconfirmed and is offered only as a possibility.

Huyshe Wolcott Yeatman-Biggs (Feb 1845 – Apr 1922; until 1898 known as Huyshe Wolcott Yeatman) was an influential Church of England clergyman who served as the only Bishop of Southwark to be a suffragan bishop (in the Diocese of Rochester), the 105th Bishop of Worcester and, latterly, as the inaugural bishop of the restored see of Coventry in the modern era.

One of c.2,500+ items once from the collection or dealer stock of Winifred A Myers (Autographs) Ltd, St Martins Lane, London, evidenced by the quantity of Myers pre-printed envelopes and paper folders and the general ‘presentation’ of the items, many having Myers identification notes in pencil.
Winifred Alice Myers (1909 - 1985) served as ABA (Antiquarian Booksellers Assoc) president, 1950-1952. See the ABA website for an extended article on Myers. Myers left her business, in 1985, to Ruth Shepherd, who traded from home until 2004.
