RUDOLF CARL VON SLATIN PASHA (1857-1932) AUTOGRAPH SIGNATURE

A highly desirable autograph of Rudolf Carl von Slatin, better known as "Slatin Pasha", the Austrian-born soldier, colonial administrator, explorer and Sudanese governor whose extraordinary career made him one of the best-known figures of the Mahdist War. He later served as Inspector-General of the Sudan and attained the rank of Major-General in British service.

The Arabic inscription is particularly significant, as Rudolf Carl von Slatin adopted the Muslim name Abd al-Qadir following his conversion to Islam while serving in Darfur during the Mahdist uprising. Contemporary Arabic sources refer to him as ʿAbd al-Qādir Salāṭīn. 

After the Mahdist victories in Sudan, Slatin surrendered in 1883 and spent approximately eleven years in captivity under the Khalifa before making a dramatic escape in 1895. His experiences became internationally famous through the bestselling memoir Fire and Sword in the Sudan. 

The inclusion of both his European signature and his adopted Arabic name directly reflects the most famous period of his life and makes this a far more interesting and desirable example than an ordinary signature. The dual-language format vividly illustrates his unique position between European imperial administration and Sudanese society.

One of c.2,500+ items once from the collection or dealer stock of Winifred A Myers (Autographs) Ltd, St Martins Lane, London, evidenced by the quantity of Myers pre-printed envelopes and paper folders and the general ‘presentation’ of the items, many having Myers identification notes in pencil. 

Winifred Alice Myers (1909 - 1985) served as ABA (Antiquarian Booksellers Assoc) president, 1950-1952. See the ABA website for an extended article on Myers. Myers left her business, in 1985, to Ruth Shepherd, who traded from home until 2004.
