Embark on a journey to a retro-future with this first ever Royal
Canadian Mint steampunk scene, which captures the grit and grandeur of an
industrial age imagined through the eyes of a bygone era. The $50 three ounce
fine silver coin features a stylized steam-powered locomotive set against a
backdrop of a fantastical vintage cityscape which comes alive with a depth of
field captured by strong engraving and extraordinary detail that blur the lines
between historical periods. To top it off, an antique finish lends the piece a
storied feel, like a long-treasured artifact from an alternate timeline. HST/GST exempt.
A
stylized steam locomotive charges out of a vintage train station, filling the
scene with steam as it pulls cars along the track. Turrets, ornate facades, and
towering buildings dotted with ironwork contribute to the cityscape that rises
up in the background, where a steamboat-inspired airship has taken to the
skies. The engine number is “2025”, which also serves as the date on the
coin. In keeping with the industrial-era
aesthetic, gears positioned near the edge partially frame the scene, while gear
shapes form a pattern on the obverse, which features the effigy of His Majesty
King Charles III by Canadian artist Steven Rosati.
This
is the first coin in what is anticipated to be a new $50 series featuring this
style of art.
