Iznik ceramics from Turkey were popular in Europe during the later 19th century and the designs were adapted by European manufacturers. The Longwy ceramics industry in France produced this plate combining Iznik motifs with some of their own characteristic techniques: turquoise and ochre glazes, narrow outlining of each color field, and simulated crazing of the base color. Magenta, cobalt and purple blooms add depth to the floral depiction. The plate measures 21cm in diameter and is in excellent condition. Longwy's mark and the number 2 are impressed on the underside.
The French town of Longwy near the Belgian border is home to a tradition of laying enamelled colours 'cloisonne' on top of ceramic. In 1798 Charles Regnier foinded an establishment for making faience, in Longwy-Bas, the lower part of the town. By the 1820s artisans were creating beautiful saturated enamels including a full range of blues from royal to turquoise and the now characteristic bleu de Longwy. Its this distinctive colours as well as the finely crackled effect of the enamel across the surface that distinguishes the highly labour intensive Longwy enamels.

Replacement glass costs just a few pounds, is easily fitted, and saves the strong likelihood of your artwork getting damaged in the post if glass were included. We ship within a maximum of 3 days of purchase and will use a variety of 24-48 hour parcel carriers including Parcelforce, UPS, Yodel, City Link and Hermes. Internationally we generally ship UPS on a 5 day service. We ship worldwide apart from The Russian Federation and certain other countries where we cannot get parcel company coverage. You are also welcome to collect from our address near Cirencester, Cotswolds – at no charge. Unfortunately we have to charge a small premium for UK Highlands & Islands as well as Northern Ireland, please email for a postal quote if you live in these areas of the country.
We accept returns when notified within 48 hours of receipt. If the return is due to an error on our part then we will pay up to £12 for the return postage. If the return is for other reasons, not the fault of ourselves, then we will not pay for the return postage but will refund the full purchase price (excluding postage) on receipt.
