Fascinating 1920s Collegiate Association Copy

This copy features incredible provenance and deep intellectual history. The front flyleaf bears the vintage ink ownership inscription of William P. Sutherland, listing his room number "203 White Hall" at the University of Kentucky (historically a men's dormitory site on the old UK campus).

Sutherland used this book heavily for a 1920s university literature or philosophy course. The volume is heavily annotated and underlined in ink throughout. Notable marginalia includes:

• A handwritten thematic index on the rear flyleaf mapping out core themes like "Philo," "Saints & infamy," and "World is tragedy."

• Underlined text directly reacting to modern concepts introduced in Hendrik Van Loon’s intro, specifically highlighting early university discourse around Sigmund Freud.

• A large conceptual annotation on the final text page comparing the ending of the novel to the "Salvation of Faust."

Condition Report:

• Cover: Classic dark green flexible leatherette with the early gold-stamped Boni & Liveright logo. The spine shows some rubbing and fading to the gilt text.

• Separation Flaw: The outer limp leatherette cover has cleanly separated from the inner mesh cloth lining and endpapers at the front and back (see photos). The text block binding itself remains structurally intact and secure.

• Interior: Clean pages with moderate, uniform age-toning typical of 1920s pulp paper stocks. No missing pages. Marks and writing are present on multiple pages as described.
