This striking antique French religious moulded alabaster composition relief plaque captures a beautifully detailed baroque depiction of the assumption of the virgin Mary surrounded by cherubs and angels. Dating to the late 19th century circa 1880, this historic piece reflects the fine craft of the late Victorian and Napoleon III eras when ground stone composites were popular for replicating classical cathedral carvings. Mounted in an ornate ebonized and giltwood stepped frame, the dramatic composition has a soft luminous stone finish of an authentic cast with reverse side held securely in place by historic wire pins and wooden shims. The central image measures 8.5cm by 11cm, while the outer dimensions of the elegant black display frame measure 19cm by 16cm. It makes a beautiful display piece for collectors of religious antiquities, classical art or traditional catholic relics. The decorative plaque is in antique used condition with a few small chips as shown in the photos and revolving video.
