NORMAN G. MACDONALD: BUSINESS AND POLITICAL HISTORY

Norman G. MacDonald was a foundational figure in mid-20th-century Hanson, Massachusetts, known as both a successful local business owner and a major influence on Plymouth County politics.

 Business: MacDonald Fuel Corporation
MacDonald served as the President and Treasurer of the MacDonald Fuel Corporation (originally MacDonald Coal & Fuel).
• Location: The corporate office and main yards were located at 1158 Main Street in Hanson.
• Operations: His company was a staple of the South Shore economy, advertising as "The House of Quality Fuels". They specialized in supplying New England Coke, D&H Anthracite coal, and Gulf Heating Oil to local households and commercial operations during the post-WWII boom.
• Community Footprint: He ran a quintessential family business, eventually employing his son-in-law, Winthrop Lincoln, and maintaining local high school yearbook sponsorships as a prominent community booster.

Politics: Plymouth County Leadership
MacDonald leveraged his business prominence into a robust political career as a staunch New England Republican, eventually rising to become the Chairman of the Plymouth County Board of Commissioners.
• The 1950 Race and "Snob Hill": MacDonald lived at 417 High Street in Hanson. The neighborhood became so associated with his political prominence, local doctors, and county leadership that town residents colloquially nicknamed it "Snob Hill". He won his seat on the commission following his mid-century campaigns, securing a vital Republican voice for Hanson on the county stage.
• Statewide Ethics Commission: His regional reputation for governance led to statewide recognition. In 1961, the Governor of Massachusetts appointed him to a highly publicized, special State Ethics Commission tasked with investigating public corruption and conflicts of interest. He served on this blue-ribbon panel alongside notable figures such as Reverend Robert Drinan and prominent Massachusetts Bar Association leaders.
