The definitive reference for the Australian 1d Red Kangaroo stamps by David Adams, Bill Bell and Greg Pope entitled: 1d RED KANGAROO AND MAP SERIS (2004) describes this variety as:
CL42 FIRST STATE (Scarcity 6):
(a) Value circle: break at 9 o'clock at junction with line 12 down.
(b) Value circle: notch on right side of 1 of 1d immediately above serif. Not in early printings.
CL42 SECOND STATE (Scarcity 8):
(a) The break in the value circle at 9 o'clock opens up.
(b) The notch becomes enlarged breaking through the lower right serif of 1 of 1d.
This variety recurs at position CL42 that is … it is the 42nd STAMP on the LEFT PANE of PLATE "C" (one of the Lower Plates used for printing these between January 1913 and November 1913). This CL42 is the SECOND STATE of the variety with the NOTCH IN THE NUMBER 1 and the LARGER BREAK IN VALUE CIRCLE. This is a very nice EXAMPLE. This one is well centered with very good perforations. ADAMS, BELL & POPE assign a Scarcity Level of 8 to STATE TWO CL42. The Australian Commonwealth Specialists’ Catalogue “KANGAROOS” (ACSC 2021) does list L42 (ACSC 2(C)h) at a value of $30 and certainly NOT taking into account the actual frequency or scarcity of the variety (indeed, it is grossly inadequate on occurrence terms only). The ACS takes a more simple 'Plate-by-Plate' value approach - with the later Plates attracting higher values). This is actually a very scarce PLATE C marsupial missing in most Plate C collections.
