“Captain Davis: A Californian Ballad” by Frederic S. Cozzens published in The Knickerbocker. Vol. XLV. New York; 1855.
Cozzens was so taken by the local report of the gunfight that he wanted to memorialize it in the form of ballad. Captain Jonathan Davis was a Mexican War veteran ambushed by 14 bandits while he and two associates were prospecting. His associates were shot, leaving Captain Davis to defend himself with two Colt revolvers and a Bowie knife. He killed 11 of the bandits while being shot himself, considered one of the deadliest, yet most remarkable, small arms engagements in American frontier history. At the time many found the story “ too incredible to believe,” so Cozzens later appeared before a judge with depositions from eyewitnesses that confirmed the details of the fight. The incident was later depicted in a statue by Michael Trcic called “One Man with Courage is a Majority.” Davis continued to mine and avoided the limelight. He said he “only did what hundreds of others might have done in the same circumstances.”
With the complete 656 page volume bound in ½ leather and marbled boards. Text is clean. The front hinge is starting and the covers are worn along the edges.
