This listing is for a vintage "C.G. Conn Ltd." Bb tenor saxophone. The serial number is 538976, indicating a c.1955 production date. This appears to be a precursor to the 16M/Director model. In other words, it is not the main/pro level model of its day. Never-the-less, it is still a solid vintage horn, manufactured when instruments were made to last!
I have this horn listed as 'for parts or not working", but it actually does play pretty decent as is. In fact, I was kind of surprised at how well it played, because I wasn't expecting it to play at all, just from looking at it. It's got a gigantic, and rich sound that rivals any pro level conn I've played. That being said, it definitely isn't in ideal playing condition. The pads are old, and a leak light inspection reveals a number of leaks. The lowest notes (from low D down to Bb) can be attained, but only with some difficulty. The bottom line is that this will need work to be put in proper playing condition. It probably could be done with a handful of new pads and some adjustment, but for optimum playability I would highly recommend a full re-pad/overhaul. Please read on for details about this sax.
