Minh Mang ruled over one of Vietnam's low points - much of which was because of diseases (Particularly cholera and smallpox) wiping out more than ten percent of the population and having to put up more than 200 rebellions. He had a very isolationist policy and missionaries was banned and ships searched before being allowed to anchor ashore and any missionaries found would be executed. In an imperial edict, Christianity was described as the "perverse European" (practice) and accused of "corrupting the hearts of men". He particularly resisted the French. He and his father before him set up the Vietnamese postal service. It wasn't as strong as in Japan but he resisted European influence as much as possible. But he also studied European technology and imported European weaponry and navigation equipment and invited doctors to come and vaccinate against smallpox. He had a fairly successful rule and Vietnam was more unified and powerful after his time in power.
