A fine autograph postcard signed by the Polish virtuoso pianist and composer Natalia Janotha (1856–1932), written from Ballater, Royal Deeside, and dated 7 October 1896. Janotha was internationally famous for her concert tours and also contributed short literary pieces to British magazines, including Home Chat.
The postcard is addressed to Mrs Mary Ann Jackson, Oak Lodge, Sidcup, near London — a household documented in Kent directories of the 1890s and linked to periodical correspondence. Janotha writes urgently, asking whether her “little article” for Home Chat has appeared.
Message side: “Oblige by letting me know if the little article appeared? (Home Chat) I just returned from N. York directly here — & remain two weeks longer. Please do kindly answer at once & truly yours Janotha 7.10.96. The Cottage Ballater.”
This fits precisely into Janotha’s 1896 itinerary: she had just completed a late‑summer New York engagement, returned directly to Scotland, and was staying in Ballater for a short residency while performing in the Aberdeen/Deeside circuit. Her request to Mrs Jackson reflects her habit of relying on London‑area intermediaries to confirm the appearance of her magazine submissions while travelling.
Address side: “Mrs Jackson Oak Lodge Sidcup, near London” On a pre‑printed 1d Queen Victoria postal card (standard inland postcard rate), with clear Ballater circular datestamp.
