Contains three fold-out cloth maps, two of which are loose in a rear pocket at the back of the book. Portrait piece of James Goodenough with tissue paper, and several woodcuts. Book plates and embossed stamps from the City of Leeds Public Library. Very good condition. The binding IDs are lightly scuffed. Pages are generally clean of writing, but some soiling is found on certain pages. The portrait piece has a small rip on the right edge. The old library card has been ripped out on the back cover. Maps are in handsome condition with little wear.

James Graham Goodenough (1830–1875) entered the Royal Navy at the age of fourteen and rose to become Commander-in-Chief of the Australia Station in 1873. He remained in service until 1875, when he died aboard HMS Pearl from infected poison-arrow wounds sustained during an attack by natives of the Santa Cruz Islands. Following his death, the work was compiled posthumously by his widow, Victoria Hamilton.
