Any residue from cleaning fluids, dyes, even fruit juices that have dried on your pan or bucket will change the composition of the rawhide. Example: soaking rawhide lace in a pan that has dried residue on it (even if you can't see it) will turn the rawhide into rubber bands texture rendering it useless for anything.
