John Rutherford: The White Chief - James Drummond (Hardback, 1908 1st ed.) NZ

The scarce 1908 Whitcombe & Tombs first edition of Drummond's edit. Originally published in 1830 as 'The New Zealanders'.

John Rutherford was an Englishman who arrived in New Zealand about 1816 aboard a whaling ship. Some of his crew were killed by Māori. Rutherford was adopted by Ngāpuhi and tattooed on his face and body. He learned to speak te reo Māori, married Māori women and fought with Ngāpuhi during the Musket Wars. He later returned to London. This 1908 version edited by James Drummond tells of Rutherford's ten-year existence among the Maoris. Gives accounts of battles, village life, religion and social customs.
