This piece is adapted from an authentic historic American sampler stitched in 1760 by an 11-year-old girl named Mary Starker (Sometimes cited as Mary Starkey) from "Newbury, New England (modern day Newburyport, Massachusetts). The original textile is housed in the permanent collection of the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. The sampler features classic 18th - century horizontal bands and a pictorial lower register: Top & Middle Sections: Multiple alphabet rows stitched in varying traditional fonts, numerical sequences and horizontal geometric and floral border patterns. Bottom Pictorial Register: A vibrant folk-art landscape scene depicting a central fruit tree flanked by leaping stags / deer, stylized birds, and large potted floral bouquets.
