Description

This specimen represents the phragmocone, the chambered internal shell of a belemnite. Belemnites were extinct marine cephalopods closely related to modern squid and cuttlefish that lived in the world's oceans during the Mesozoic Era.

The phragmocone consisted of a series of chambers filled with gas and liquid, allowing the animal to control its buoyancy in the water. These delicate internal structures are less commonly preserved than the solid rostrum and provide an interesting insight into belemnite anatomy.

This specimen comes from the famous Jurassic deposits of Aveyron, France, and is preserved with a metallic pyritized appearance.
