(1365-83) Belgium Flanders 2 Groschen, Louis II of Male - Choice About Uncirculated, PCGS AU55.  The is the only example of this coin graded by PCGS and the finest example we have found in our research.


Obverse: Lion seated on the left, his head covered with a helmet, in an epicycloid. Lettering: LVDOVICVS : DEI : GRA : COmES : Z : DNS : FLAnDRIE. Translation: Louis, by the grace of God, count and lord of Flanders

Reverse: Flowered cross. Lettering: + MONETA DE FLANDRIA + BENEDICTVS: QVI: VENIT: IN: NOmINE: DOmINE.
Translation: Coin of Flanders. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord


Louis II of Male, also known as Louis II, Count of Flanders, was a nobleman who ruled over several territories in the 14th century. Born on October 25, 1330, at Male Castle, Flanders, he became Count of Flanders, Nevers, and Rethel in 1346, following the death of his father, Louis I of Flanders, at the Battle of Crécy.

Throughout his reign, Louis II navigated the complex political landscape between France and England, ensuring relative peace and economic recovery in Flanders despite challenges like the Black Death and revolts led by the weavers of Ghent. His only daughter, Margaret III, married Philip the Bold, which helped establish the House of Valois-Burgundy in Flanders.

Louis II died on January 30, 1384, in Saint-Omer, County of Artois. His death marked a significant shift in European politics, as Flanders became part of the Burgundian domain.
