A fantastic opportunity to own a genuinely boutique overdrive from David Allen Pickups. These don't come up very often in the UK and are a real hidden gem for anyone looking for something a bit different from the usual Tube Screamer or Bluesbreaker style circuits.
This pedal is in great condition and has only seen light use. It's been very well looked after and everything works exactly as it should.
The Bazooka has a really distinctive voice. It delivers low to medium gain overdrive with loads of touch sensitivity and a very amp-like feel. David Allen designed it with the compression and sag of a brownface Fender amp in mind, but it can also push towards classic Marshall-style tones as the gain is increased. It manages to stay full sounding rather than simply boosting the mids like many overdrives.
One of its standout features is the unique Load switch, which gives three very usable voicings. The centre position is the brightest setting, one position adds extra mids, while the other adds both mids and low end without sacrificing the highs. It makes the pedal incredibly versatile and lets you tailor it to different guitars and amps with ease.
The controls are cleverly named too:
• Elevation controls the output volume. • Chatter controls the amount of gain, from edge of breakup through to rich overdrive. • Range is an exceptionally usable tone control. • Load is a three-way voicing switch that reshapes the mids and bass response, making this far more flexible than a typical single-tone-knob overdrive. The low end boost mode gives a really punchy quality to the bass frequencies. A brilliant feature.
Construction quality is exactly what you'd expect from a boutique builder. It uses through-hole components, true bypass switching, accepts standard centre negative 9V power or a battery, and even features a socketed op amp for those who enjoy experimenting.
If you're looking for something that's beautifully made, sounds different from the mainstream options, and offers a huge amount of tonal flexibility, this is well worth a look.
