A BEAUTIFUL SET OF 1st WATERMARK [1913] 3d OLIVE KANGAROO SHADES AS LISTED BY THE AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH SPECIALISTS' CATALOGUE "KANGAROOS" (2025) - CV TOTAL CV$90+
The 1st Watermark 3d Olive was 'issued' on 22 January 1913 (and this may be the first date of supply). A cover is recorded dated 28 January 1913 and this is thought to be the first date of issue. They were printed from two Plates (Plate 1 - UPPER and Plate 2 - LOWER) each with 120 stamps-on, in two Panes of 60 each, in 10 horizontal Rows of 6 stamps. They were used as the 'registration fee' and as the 'commercial papers rate' to foreign countries at the time. There were two printings in January 1913 and in February 1914, totalling 14,440,000 stamps - 69,120 of these were spoilt - leaving a total issue of 14,330,880 1st Watermark 3d Olives. THE AUSTRALIAN COMMONWEALTH SPECIALISTS' CATALOGUE "KANGAROOS" (ACSC 2025) lists the shades of the 1913 Olive Kangaroos as:
ACSC 12A: OLIVE
ACSC 12C: OLIVE-GREEN &
ACSC 12E: PALE OLIVE-GREEN
As you can see, these are very clean and crisp Kangaroo stamps with lovely colour separation and light, unobtrusive postmarks. These CV at $90 in total for the individual stamps. Of course, they are worth more than the individual stamps as a shade-set and the fact that the paleolivegreen is in a PAIR. The reason why the ACSC 'Letter signifiers' are not consecutive (A,C&E) is that the Die II shades are listed as ACSC 12B, D & F). A very interesting way to collect Kangaroo stamps is to gather a page or pages of the same watermark and denomination to see the brilliance of all the various colours across a page. The variance in shades on a page of 3d Olive 1st Watermark stamps is very striking and this is a great start point showing the LISTED shades of the 1913 1st Watermark ‘Olive' Kangaroo.
