Vintage Brass Peacock Fan Edwardian Art Deco Fire Screen Guard Log Burner c1920s.

You’ll find there are a few brass, peacock fire guards around, but there aren’t many quite like this one.

Perfect for a large open fireplace and equally as good in front of a log burner.

I’ve sold a number of these, mainly the griffin style which in my opinion don’t really compare.

To me, this is a proper, original screen from the Art Deco period, dating I would think from as early as 1920 to as late as maybe 1940? I think nearer 1920 as to me, the style screams the crossover period between Art Nouveau and Art Deco. If it was later, 1930’s, I would have expected to be more Neo-Classical revival.

Whatever, it’s absolutely stunning and in great condition for its age.

The brass is overall in lovely condition with some imperfections and minor oxidisation to the surface of the rear of the fan panels which isn’t visible when the guard is viewed from the front.

If you look very hard, you might be able to pick up some feint scratching to the front of the panels but like I say, you’ll have to look very hard.

The screen sat in a barn for a very long time and was rescued only recently. I have stripped it down to component form and I cleaned every piece. The inner pivot mechanism has been oiled and moves well.

Stripping it down allowed me to study the construction and compared to others, it really is of a superior quality.

The two side fin locking arms are both present and they are both stamped ‘MADE IN ENGLAND’ which also suggests this style of screen was made for the export market of the time.

It weights in at a hefty 6.5 kilos and it’s built like a tank! Very strong and sturdy.

The pierced brass panels allow warmth and flame glow to pass through and the folding design allows the guard to be stored tidily to one side when not in use. Even then, its ornamental appeal is extremely strong.

If you’re on a budget, there are lots of cheaper styles around but if not, this is the one!
