Here is a pair of beautiful and VERY LARGE, classic Victorian style, Mike Smith Designs (Windsor Authority), wall mounted coach house lanterns with their original brackets.

They look fantastic and they’re really solid. They’d look perfect on a barn, a period property or even as contrasting pieces in more modern, contemporary surroundings.

I have included a tin of beans in some of the images to give an idea of size perspective. The beans are not included in the sale.

I’m afraid I don’t know their age but it’s very much in the style of the 1800’s Victorian era. Mike Smith Designs are no longer trading but you may get an idea of their age if you look in to the company?

The lamp units inside look complete but neither lamp has been tested. My plan was to rip out the current electric and install an internal roof bar with a simple lamp holder to hold a bright LED lamp. You may prefer to overhaul the current electrics but that’s personal choice and should only be done by a qualified electrician.

Please note that currently, the lanterns require a specific type of bulb which is a ‘High Pressure Sodium’ lamp. I think at least one of the current lamps/bulbs has blown?

Note also, that when the electricians took them down from their last position, they cut the internal cable which will need re-joining with a suitable waterproof fitting.

The height of the lanterns is around 48” tall including their brackets.

The width of the lanterns at the widest part of the lid is approximately 17.5”.

Including the bracket, they protrude from the wall around 25”.

Weight unknown but I’d estimate them to be around 10-12 kilos each?

Each lantern would need four big screws or bolts to attach them to the wall.

The four panes are all Perspex (I think it’s a single shaped unit), and there is some historic scratching but it’s not obtrusive when they’re mounted up a height. You could replace the panes with new Perspex or perhaps glass but in my humble opinion, it looks fine as it is. Clean glass becomes murky very quickly so it might be a lot of bother for no real gain. All personal choice of course.

The paintwork looks as if it has been renewed recently, I can’t offer much information on that other than it looks ok to me. You could have them stripped and repainted but again, it’s a bit of a rigmarole and if it was me, I wouldn’t bother.

LAST POINT: When I acquired the lanterns, I also got the brackets that could be used to mount them on to posts. These are in a ‘reclaimed’ state and would need some work to free up the sixteen mounting allen head bolts (eight on each bracket) which are siezed. They would I think need to be drilled out. Not at all impossible but just a bit fiddly and they would probably need re-tapping and new slightly bigger bolts fitting (easy if you know how). They could be released with a lubricating agent but please don’t bank on it. In my opinion they’re not coming out but I’m no engineer.

I’m happy to include the post brackets in their current state at no extra cost but just be aware that they’ll need work.
