Printed captions include: Tennessee State Capitol Building was erected in 1845-1853, at a cost of $2,500,000. The architectural idea is that of a Greek Ionic Temple. The architect, William Strickland, of Philadelphia, died before the building was completed and was entombed in a recess in the north wall. The building stands on an eminence of 175 feet above the Cumberland River and the building has an elevation of 75 feet 8 inches above the ground. On the terrace grounds are several handsome pieces of statuary. These include an equestrian statue of President Jackson, a tomb of President Polk and the Sam Davis Monument.
