This locket measures 6.3cm long and 4cm wide (approx - including bail). It is hallmarked on the back with a maker's / sponsor's mark of ' E.U ' (although I have found E.U listed, I have been unable to find the name associated with those initials), a lower case 'e' (c1879), and anchor (Birmingham) and a lion passant. The inside of the front of the locket is stamped with a lower case 'e' and a lion passant. The single photo retainer is also stamped with a lion passant. Please note there is no glass inside.
This is probably one of the best examples I have come across for the period. The locket opens / shuts well, but as with most lockets of the period, the hinge needs to be handled with care when opening / closing. If you are looking for an example in mint / perfect condition then this one is not for you, as there are some imperfections commensurate with age / wear / storage.
This locket is being sold as photographed. I do wonder if the locket was was originally silver gilt, as there is evidence of a gold tone on the outside in places, in certain lights, but this is just a personal suggestion - please view the images and make your own assessment. The inside panels definitely have a gold / gilt tone to them.
Condition: This engraved locket is being sold as photographed with some shallow knocks / dents, surface rubbing / wear to detail / hallmark, discolouration, tarnishing, scratches and stubborn marks. It may well benefit from appropriate additional cleaning, but I will leave that decision to its new owner. I have taken a number of photos to allow potential bidders the opportunity to make their own assessment, in addition to them forming part of the description.
This piece is being sold with imperfections commensurate with age / wear / storage, so please take time to read the
condition description / Seller Notes above, in addition to viewing the images, before bidding. The ruler (in mm) and cotton reel are not part of the listing, but there just to give an idea as to size / perspective.
Please feel free to ask any questions but please
please ask through Ebay. Unfortunately, selling on Ebay generates a lot of spam and dubious emails and I
now only respond to questions placed directly through Ebay. I will try to answer questions as soon as
possible, but this will normally be in the evening. There are times where I may not be able to reply
within 24 hours but I will reply well before the listing ends.
Postage UK : I am always happy to combine postage, but please contact me before
paying to arrange the most suitable method.
International items under 2kg will still be sent via Royal Mail. I will quite happily post most items
overseas, but if I have not already been provided international prices, please ask me for postage costs before
bidding.
Packing -
I pack to ensure the item arrives with you undamaged. If you have
specific packing instructions, please contact me before paying as this
may have an impact on the price, as both an increase in weight or size
can increase the cost of delivery.
I do try to recycle boxes and other materials wherever possible and will sometimes use newspaper for
padding out, if it does not have any impact on the cost of postage.
