A fine Victorian Pallant precision engineer’s spirit level,
clearly marked “Pallant, Strand, London” in gilt lettering to
one side of its substantial black-finished metal body. The opposite side of the instrument is additionally inscribed “W. French” in matching gilt lettering. This is a professional precision instrument. It incorporates a single long glass spirit vial.
John Pallant was a documented Victorian optician and mathematical
instrument maker associated with 51 Strand, London. Records place
him working as a mathematical instrument maker during the mid-19th century, with
his business supplying optical, mathematical and scientific instruments from one
of London’s best-known centres for precision instrument making.
Based upon Pallant’s documented working period at the Strand, the level can
reasonably be dated to the mid-19th century, circa 1843–1869.
It is accompanied by its original fitted leather protective travelling case,
which has developed an attractive, well-used antique patina.
