The Negombo Canal, constructed during the Dutch colonial period in Sri Lanka, formed part of an extensive inland waterways system designed to facilitate the transport of goods like spices and cinnamon. A. W. A. Platé & Co. was a prominent early studio founded in Colombo in 1890, renowned for producing high-quality photographic views and postcards documenting colonial Ceylon. Postcards sent during this period reflect the flourishing global postal network enabled by the Universal Postal Union.
