A VERY NICE 1st WATERMARK ½d GREEN KANGAROO VARIETY: "COLOUR INK FLAW OFF NSW COAST" (VARIABLE) - GREG POPE'S 1R6 - GREG POPE STATE 3!
The ½d Green Kangaroo was first issued in Melbourne on 14 January 1913 and in Sydney on 20 January. These marsupials were printed from two Plates (Plate 1 - UPPER and Plate 2 - LOWER) each with 120 stamps on in two Panes of 60 (with each Pane consisting of 10 horizontal rows of 6 stamps). They were used as the newspaper & magazine rate, and for printed matter within Australia, they were also used to 'make-up' the 1½d for the foreign postcard rate (with the 1d). There were 317,040,000 ½d Kangas printed in four separate printings. The definitive Reference for the Australian ½d Green Kangaroo stamp by GREG POPE entitled: ½d GREEN KANGAROO AND MAP SERIES (2003) describes this variety in THREE STATES:
1R6 FIRST STATE:
(a) A variable coloured flaw sometimes oval between two/three lines of shading adjacent to the NSW coast and the end of the Kangaroo's tail.
(b) Break in 2nd shading line above the last A of Australia.
SECOND STATE:
(a) and (b) As above.
(c) small notch in upper frame above US of Australia.
THIRD STATE:
(a) and (b) As above.
(c) Notch in upper frame deeper into frame line.
(d) White area between feet of A of Australia joined to crossbar above.
This variety recurs at Plate Position 1R6 … that is … it is the 6th STAMP on the RIGHT PANE of PLATE 1 (the UPPER Plate used for printing). This example is the very interesting STATE 3 (with the Small Notch in the UPPER Frame above "US" and the WHITE AREA between the feet of the last A joined to the crossbar above). There is also a vertical watermark line at the back, denoting the RIGHT COLUMN. The coloured flaw is ‘variable’ and can range from imperceptible to quite marked. This one is very clear.
