A VERY UNUSUAL 3rd WATERMARK DIE IIa 2d GREY KANGAROO VARIETY: “BREAK IN COAST AT BOTTOM OF GULF" - UNLISTED PLATE 3 (DIE IIa) VARIETY - FIRST TIME LISTED BY DANMAGPIE
The Die IIa 3rd Watermark 2d GREY Kangaroo was printed in March 1918 by J.B. COOKE then by T.S. HARRISON through to October 1920. A new Plate 3 (Die IIa) was inserted in the upper position in March 1918 to replace the original Plate 1 (Die I) used for the initial 1st, 2nd & 3rd Watermark printings. The 2d Grey was used as the 2nd weight step for letters within Australia and the British Empire. Overall, there were four printings off Plates 2 & 3 resulting in 14,400,000 stamps of which half were from Plate 3 (Die IIa) leaving only 7,200,000 Die IIa stamps. This particular 2d Grey Kangaroo carries a "CLEAR BREAK IN THE COAST AT THE BOTTOM OF THE GULF OF CARPENTARIA" THIS IS QUITE A SIGNIFICANT BREAK IN THE COAST. This is not listed by POPE and certainly NOT by the 2025 ACSC, and yet it is such an obvious flaw it leads me to assume that its occurrence is very scarce and not picked up in the volume researched by GREG. It is Dated 1 AUGUST 1918 with no Watermark lines at the back.
